if you're ever in dc, i highly recommend the o st mansion (self led) champagne tour. a converted hodge-podge maze of a mansion complete with secret doors, decked out themed rooms, hidden wine cellars, 2 story indoor log cabins, memorabilia and more bathrooms than you could ever use in a lifetime. we snagged a living social deal and wandered our way up 5 levels and across the 5 combined rowhouses, stopping to ogle at the mounds of misplaced books, guitars and chotchkies-all donated and mostly for sale (a hoarders paradise!). oddly enough, the mansion is also a functioning hotel, so we were never quite sure who (or what) we would find *thankfully nothing traumatizing. we only managed to find around 5 of the countless hidden doors, passages and crawl spaces, so i guess ill just have to go back to find the rest!

the colonial adventures just keep on commin! and i say bring. it. on. erin and i bought a capitol deal for the claude moore colonial farm experience and it did NOT disappoint. after tiring ourselves out touring the grounds and chatting up the militia men, we checked out the market place to load up on your standard colonial fare: cheap eats ($2 pork sausage sandwiches! $1 rhubarb pie!) and drinks (not an original recipe, but something about 18th century living always seems to warrant an ale or two). naturally, i had to try on another 1700s farm-wench costume (an onlooker even commented on how well my ensemble suited my pasty skin tone and gigantess height. i think its a sign). and i just couldnt resist getting my portrait done by a scissor-silhouette artist *one of only ten in the country! best $15 i've ever spent.

despite the stormy weather and buckets of rain, our day trip to monticello was a total success. not only did we get the extended tour of jefferson's home and gardens, we got to play dress-up in bonnets and dresses, eat in ye old tavern featuring 'traditional' 18th century recipes (fried chicken?) and speak in fake british accents *i may have been the only one speaking in a horrible faux-english accent
my poor dad had to put up with my obnoxious instance at taking posed/embarrassing pictures at every corner. thankfully, my mom was all over it! i guess my obsession with everything colonial runs in the family...
if the whole ocean conservation thing doesn't pan out, i'll always have my career as a reenactor to fall back on
